State Ready to Debate Issue

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The adult entertainment impact fund sponsored by Whittier Democratic Assemblyman Charles Calderon would raise tax money from adult media and live shows.

But the plan is already generating opposition.

Porn star Mary Carey, who ran for governor in 2003, was back at the Capitol on Monday trying to stop the porn tax bill.

The $3-billion industry in California employs 50,000 workers.

Carey said it would be just another tax driving away business.

"People are just going to get it from other places," Carey said. "If there is a tax here, they'll just order more online or from other countries and that's not going to benefit California in any way."

Caldron said the tax is not about morals but a way to help balance the state budget.
