Oakland Journalist Chauncey Bailey gunned down

Longtime Oakland, Calif. journalist Chauncey Bailey was gunned down in broad daylight on a Bay Area sidewalk, police said Thursday.

The shooting happened near the corner of 14th and Alice streets near Lake Merritt on Thursday morning. Bailey was shot once in the back of the head by a masked gunman wearing all black clothing, who then fled on foot, Oakland Fire Department Capt. Melinda Drayton said.

A witness described to KPIX-TV hearing the loud boom of a single shot. Police say the weapon might have been either a shotgun or a high-powered rifle.
